DISCOVER THE STORY BEHIND THE ABAMILO

Abamilo is one of the more than 30 clans that make the Wakerewe of Ukerewe Island in Lake Victoria, Northern Tanzania. The Abamilo ancestors are said to have arrived on Ukerewe (Bukerebe) Island on floating tiles (Amafunzyo), complete with their cattle, as they were essentially pastoralists.

OUR STORY

According to legend, Abamilo came from an area of the “Mountains of Milo” in Abyssinia, somewhere in present day Ethiopia or Sudan, hence the name Abamilo or “the people of, or from Milo.” According to legend, Abamilo are found in many areas of the interlacustrine region, including eastern DR Congo, Burundi, Rwanda, Uganda, western Tanzania and Kenya, where according to oral stories, most of the Luos of Karacheni, near Kisumu are said to be Abamilo.

According to oral traditions, those who eventually arrived on Ukerewe Island were said to have trekked eastwards first from present-day Mbarara district in southern Uganda, in the land of the Abanyankole. Their village of dispersal in Ankole was said to be called “Nyangoma” in Mbarara, which should not be mistaken with “Nangoma,” in Kiziba, Misenyi district, Kagera region, north-western Tanzania.

They arrived and settled for a while in the Kisumu area before they drifted off on floating tiles to eventually arrive on Ukerewe Island. It is interesting to note that in Ukerewe they often refer to themselves and are identified by others both as Abanyankole and as Abagaya, the Kikerewe term for Luos.   Therefore, sifted and analysed, their story would make very interesting reading as Abamilo now appear to comprise both members of the Bantu speaking communities of the region as well as the Nilo-Hamitic, such as the Luos, historically thought to have different roots. Indeed, Africa is one.

OUR OBJECTIVES

The creation of the Abamilo clan website is a passion project aimed at bringing all clansmen closer together. My goal is to unite our community by compiling a comprehensive list of members and establishing networks that enable collaboration. This platform will act as a central hub for communication and interaction, ensuring our clan's influence continues to grow. We invite all Abamilo clansmen to come together, share experiences, and build a vibrant community that thrives on connection and support!
